AMBITIOUS TO FLY.

SPENDTHRIFT IN COURT.

CARRIED REVOLVER IN POCKET. TO HAND MONEY TO TRUSTEES. A wealthy young Aucklander's ambition to become an airman and to spend his newly-acquired fortune in extravagant living was quashed by "-Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday afternoon, when the young man, whose name was ordered to be supp/Vessed, appeared for sentence on a charge of being in unlawful possession of a revolver. At the time of his arrest last Thursday accused was carrying a six-chambered revolver and a considerable sum of money in the pockets of his clothing. He told the police he wanted Jto go abroad and see the world, and that he intended to buy an aeroplane for £4OO for the purpose of making a flight from Australia to England. Ho had made arrangements to leave for Sydney by the Ulimaroa on the following day, but he was restrained from doing so by the Court. The revolver, hj» informed the police, had been given to him by a girl friend. "This young man had no ammunition on him when he was arrested, but we. have evidence to prove that he had previously had some," said Ghief-Detective Hammond, yesterday afternoon. "He was left a lot of money by his mother, and he has just come into possession of a portion of it, having recently attained the age of 21. He had been some trouble to his relatives in the past, and he seems to want to spend his money as fast as he can."

Evidence was given by friend of accused's family, who suggested that for his own good the young man should be induced to hand over his money to trustees. "I have known accused for some years and have seen a good deal of him in the past few weeks. He is a fine boy, but is living abovo himself,"- said witness. "In my opinion the sooner he goes 'broke' the better," said accused's brother-in-law. "He is lazy in certain directions, and if he loses his money he will have to work. He is not dishonest, but he is young and irresponsible, and has a foolish ambition to become an airman. At present he is juut 'knocking about,' and spending money." "He is certainly going through his money at a fast rate," said the probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell. "Yes," agreed Mr. Hammond, "he has just incurred a debt of £l7O at a city jeweller's shop." On the advice of the magistrate accused agreed to allow his money to be placed in the hands of trustees. In adjourning the case for a week Mr. Hunt said that should accused fail to sign a deed of declaration of trust the only thing to do would be to admit him to probation for a period so that he would be under supervision. An order was made for the confiscation of the revolver.
