NEED OF ECONOMY.
MOUNT EDEN FINANCES. MEETING OF COUNCIL. The need of a close scrutiny of expenditure during the present financial year was urged by Mr. W. 11. Nagle at a meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council last evening, when several means of economy were considered. Reports are to be obtained from the Finance Committee on the organisation and work of the inside staff and from the Works Committee on the activities of the outside staff. A communication from the Auckland City Council drew attention to the request of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, Dr. Liston. to have tho Crown grant thoroughfare, Reed's Road, a boundary between Mount Eden and the city, formed as far as the school and the residence proposed to be erected on a site north of the Grammar School. The formation work was expected to cost £1250, but the council found it could not contribute toward the expenditure. The Finance Committee is to investigate tho complaint of a ratepayer that the value of his property had been increased from £BO to £250 because of information wrongly supplied to tho valuer. The Mayor, Mr. T. McNab, remarked that the posMon presented difficulties, as the council ( id not possess authority to remit rates, except in cases of extreme hardship. The issue of 21 building permits to the value of £3310 for' tho month ended April 30 was reported.
