SIMPLICITY IN PALACE.
SURPRISED REPUBLICANS. PROPERTY OF KING'S MOTHER. (Received May 1". 5.3 p.m.) MADRID, May 16. The authorities, when taking over the Miramar Palace at San Sebastian, were surprised at the simple furnishings. It contained nothing of particular value. There were just plain crockery, glass, a few pictures and a number of unopened cases addressed to the late Queen Mother, to whom the palace had belonged. Twenty motor-cars, which had been reported to be there, had disappeared. They were apparently sold before (he embargo on the sale of Royal property. ATTACKS ON CHUECII. POPE'S STRONG PROTEST. THE POSITION INTOLERABLE. LONDON", May 15. A message from the Vatican City states that the Holy Sec has forwarded to the Spanish Government a strong protest against the deeds of violence committed in Spain in connection with churches aiid religious institutions. The Madrid correspondent of the Daily Mail says the damage done to Church property in the riots is estimated at £5.000.000. The Pope's protest was couched in very definite terms. It drew the attention of iho Government to its failure to carry out its promises in respect of tho Church and declared that the situation had become intolerable. EX-KING ALFONSO. NO COMMENT ON EVENTS. (Received Mav IT, S.'ls p.m.) LONDON, May 16. The Duke of Miranda, who is in closo association with ex-King Alfonso, states that the King is observing the strictest silence about the present events in Spain. Consequently he is not prepared to comment on the confiscation of his property or the proposed charges against him.
