RACING SEASON.

INTEREST IN JUMPERS. THE WANGANUI MEETING. CENTURY HURDLES FIELD. great northern horses t With the iumnine season now in propress more ili.in ordinary infprest is l'oinp manifested in the jumners and flip Wanparui Jockev Hull's Winter Meet inc. to lie held next Thursday and Saturday, will furnish Followers of racing with a furtlipr line on the form of the lumping brigade. ]"or manv years the meeting was one that never failod to rrpatc wide interest and ronsidprable nttpnlion was always focusspd on flip Wanganui Steeplechase and the Century irurdlps, whirl) formed a very popular double. Of necessity the Wanganui .Torkpy Club had to reduce stakes, which stood at a high level a few ypars ago, and in consequence its winter meeting is not now the important fixture it used to be. Moreovpr, the reduction of the distance of tlio Century/ Hurdles to one mile and threeqnarters has detracted somewhat from the interest/in that race, which formerly often provided a good line on the form of candidates for the Great Northern Hurdles at Kllei-slie.

South Island Horses. Tills year the Wanganui Steeplechase will not he run until the second day, but the fields for the jumping races on the first day are sufficiently good to cause Thursday's racing to attract marked attention. No fewer than nine Great Northern Hurdles candidates figure in the field for the Century Hurdles, and they comprise G'arinthia, Mister Gamp, Make Up, 'Keel Fuchsia, Nukumai, .Aurora Borealis, Fine Acre, Perle de Leon and ('allamart. In addition there are Conjured 11., Llandudno, Hymgreat and The Warden, so that a good contest should be cssured.

The presence of the South Island horses f.'arinthia, Perle de Leon and Make Up indicates that they are coming to Ellerslie iiiul it will he interesting to see how they perform. • The race hears an extremely op'On aspect and there are undoubtedly many with chances. Carinthia and Make Up have had some racing lately to fit them for tha task, and the same applies to Nukumai, Aurora Borealis, Perle do Leon and Callaniart. One or two of the others might ho in need of a run and the chances are very difficult to estimate. The final gallops and schooling may have a decided influence on the betting, but horses who may find favour are Make Up, Aurora Borealis and 'Llandudno. Grandstand Steeplechase. The Grandstand Steeplechase field includes five Great Northern Steeplechase candidates, Omeo, Nukumai, Skyridcr, Birkbeck and Kaokaoroa. The race is run over a shorter distance and over different country from that at Ellerslie, and except for furnishing a line whether horses are in good condition or otherwise, it is unlikelv to throw much light on the Great Northern. Birkbeck and Oineo were winners;'at Hiwca and they should be capable of good efforts. Nukumai also showed some dash at Hawera ami lie is another with ; a chafice. Skvrider should be suited by the distance, and the fences and she may make it hard for the best of them. The main fancies may include Skvrider find Nukumai. The fields for the chief flat events are very satisfactory, there being 11 in the Empire Handicap and nine in the Winter Oats Handicap. Horses who may find favour in the Empire Handicap are Silvermine, Paitonu and Cashier, while the fancies for the Winter Oats Handicap may .include Aston, Ornpai and Ridgcmount.
