OLD MAN'S OFFENCE.
GUILTY OF RECEIVING. A charge of breaking and entering a house at Papakura and stealing a gold chain and pendant, valued at CIO, was preferred against Alexander Angus, aged 76 (.Mr. Via lon x), in the Supreme Court yesterday, before Mr. Justice Smith and a jury. William Henry Thompson said his house was entered on January 30 during his absence. A gold chain and pendant was removed from a waistcoat which was lying on a bed. Constable Holland stated that on the following morning he found accused near the Papakura Hotel with the jewellery in his possession. He was trying to hide the chain in a stable at the rear ot the hotel. Accused said he had been given the chain to sell hy a married man who lived at Papakura. lie refused to name the owner of the chain. Accused was found not guilty of break ing and entering and theft, but guilty on a count of receiving stolen property Sentence was deferred until the close ol Lhe criminal sessions.
