FINED FOR NEGLIGENCE.
CASE AGAINST TAXI-DRIVER. COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE. Reserved judgment was delivered in Otalmhu Police Court yesterday by Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., in respect of four charges preferred against Arthur E. Jones, a taxi-driver. lie was charged with dangerous driving, negligent driving, failing to report an accident and failing to give his name. These arose out of the defendant's taxi having knocked down a pedestrian and injured him at Otahuhu on March 13. The magistrate said it was clear that defendant, had been guilty of negligent driving in running the pedestrian down as he had. At the magistrate's suggestion the police withdrew the dangerous driving charge. The evidence showed that defendant had failed to give his name, although it had been asked .for twice. In reporting the accident some hours later his action left a suspicion that he had clone so on information that inquiries were being pursued. It was a duty to report immediately when an accident resulted in anyone being injured. Defendant was fined £2 and £4 costs for negligent driving and £1 and 10s costs on each of the other two charges. He was allowed one month in which to make payment.
