STANDARDISED CHEESE.
BAN ON MANUFACTURE.
"A MATTER OF NECESSITY."
ULTIMATUM TO INDUSTRY.
INTENTIONS OF GOVERNMENT.
[BY telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON, Sunday.
The quality of New Zealand cheese, particularly that known as " standardised," is the subject of an important statement released this evening by the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. A. J. Murdoch. After making an exhaustive analysis of the industry the Minister expresses the opinion that it has become a necessity to revert to the manufacture of full-cream cheese.
" It is evident," says the Minister s statement, " that the use of tho biand ' Cheddar 1 will have to cease before the new season opens, and the position has been reached when a decision has to be made whether the manufacture of whole milk (full-cream) cheese, and of this only, shall be reverted to.
" It view of tho latest reports by cablegram tliis, in my opinion, has become a matter of necessity. " As I have atrcady stated it has been the established policy of the Government to regard the dairying industry as a business concern fully able to manage its own business aiffairs, the department .assisting as much as possible.
".The rapid expansion of the industry in rocent years, combined with tho generally good quality of its output and the largo monetary return received from its sales, indicate great success in management.
" It is necessary now to iackle all the troubles and to do all that is possible to overcome them. I fully believe that this is tho opinion of tho industry. If it is unable to reach unanimity on what needs to be done it will bo for the Government to givo a definite lead."
