CANADIAN HORSE'S WIN.

SUCCESS OF MR. PENALTY

FIRST START IN DOMINION. Myrt'.ene, carrying only £IS 10s in a very poor pool, won the Waitoa Handicap after a jjood finish with Jackie Thorpe. Roland began best and led past the stands from Ilinton Bell and Cleao, the rest being well back. Five furlongs from home Myrtlene headed Roland. Villi Jackie Thorpe, Oliver Thorpe, Dolly Thorpe and Cleao close up, bunched. Jackie Ihorpo tooit charge appioaching the home turn and led into the straight from Myrtlene and Oliver Thorpe, Dolly Thorpe heading the remainder, several lengths away. In the run to the post Myrtlene finished more strongly than Jackie Thorpe and beat him by a length. Two and n-half lengths away came Oliver Thorpe, followed by Bismuth, who was well back in the early stages, Dolly Thorpe, Condor Bell and Cleao. The favourite, Araboiul, fell just after (ho start and Moko Chief took no part in the race, while the well-fancied Betty (iuy lost a lot of ground and was never prominent.

The Elstow Trot was a procession. Tiwlia and Bingen Bell early establishing a long lead, owing lo several of the others refusing to keep the correct gait. With half a milo gone Bingen Bell was showing the way to TiwliPi, and along the back they were 30 lengths clear of Win Huon, who was several lengths in front of Joy Ride and Black Magic. Bingen Bell skipped crossing the toj>, allowing Tiwha to go to the front, and bo led into the straight from Bingen Bell by' 10 lengths, with Black Magic and Win Huon next. Tiwha won easing up by five lengths from Bingen Bell, with Black Magic 10 lengths away third and Joy Ride and Win Huon next. In spile of his good showing at Thames, Tiwha. who was confidently driven by E. S. Groat, returned a good price. The Cup Contest. Master Huia and Great Parrish were, the only defections from the cup field and Grand Canyon was made favourite over Peter Pirato and First Flight, the winner. Nell a Dillon, being at double figures. Lady Author, June Nordica and Brutus broko up ut the start and were quickly .out of count. First Flight began smartly ' and, securing the rail, led past the stand \ from Nella Dillon, Dan Direct, Peter Pirato, Wakefield and Grand Canyon. First Fligl * ! showed the way iwsi the mile in 2m 22.. I where Ncila Dillon, Dan Direct and Mis noune v.-ero in close attendance, with Pet£ ! Pirate and Grand Canyon next. Crossing ' the top the field bunched, and Grand Carij yon made a forward move, to trail behind I First Flight into the straight, with Nella I Dillon, Mignonne. Dan Direct and Peter i Pirato almost in line.

Grand Canyon weakened in tlio last halffurlong and First Flight was heralded as the winner, but. vigorously driven by C. G. Lee. Nella Dillon stayed ou better to get the decision by a neck. Dan Direct was less than a length away third, followed by Peter Pirate, with Great Ballin, well back, heading Iho remainder. First Flight must be considered very unlucky, as she had to cover the last mile with a flat tyre. Grand Canyon also war; unfortunate, a wheel of his sulky being damaged by a following horse. Easy Win For Kewpie's Guy.

Kewpie's Guy broke the run of outsiders when she jogged homo in the Manawaru Handicap, being at a short price. Her task was made easier through (he leader, Carnui, tangling and losing a lot of ground half a milo from home. When making another strong effort in tlio straight Carnui again left his feet.

Silver Link began best and led to the straight, where Carnui just headed him, with Kewpie's Triumph ulmost in lino and Andover and Kewpie's Guy at the head of the rest. Carnui and Silver Link broke, leaving Andover to take the lead across tho top, but the favourite had charge into the straight and won comfortably by a length and a half from the little-fancied Andover, who defeated Carnui by two lengths. Silver Link was fourth, with Impromptu nest and the rest well back. After the race C. Moran, driver of Impromptu, was called before tho stewards and asked to explain why his liorse was not made more use of over the first mile. Tho driver explained that his horse broke an overchcck and would not settle down. lhe explanation was accepted. 'fiie Waihou Handicap.

The Canadian (rotter Mr. Penalty, having his filot race in New Zealand, won ' the ,Valliou Trot practically fioni end to end, ueing well handled by his owner, fc . J. Smith. When the signal was given Joy ilido was turned the wrong way round and lost a lot of ground. Mr. Penalty began smartly, to lead from Gold Realm, who momentarily headed the imported horse, but soon broke, and Mr. Penalty led naet :)ie stand front the favourite, Finoro. Black •Magic, Gold Star and Wimmera Kin?, who Mind made up his handicap in good style. A loner the back Finoro ran up to Mr. Penalty but could not head him, while Gold Star. Black Magic and Wimmera King were close up in a bunch. Mr. Penalty led the favourite into the straight, and. under pressure, Finoro broke, leaving the Canadian to stall off a final challenge from Gold Star, who failed to get up by a length and a-half. Wimmera King was half a length away third, followed by Black Magic and Finoro. •J. T. Paul's cast-off My Thorpe, ridden by .his owner, J. P. Donahue, finished better than anything else in the field to win the Hot Springs paddle event. Marosa began like a rocket and soon opened up a big break oil the field, her nearest attendants at the half-mile being Prince Lochiiv var, Nathaniel and My Thorpe, with the rest well strung out: Marosa was still well clear into the straight from Prince Lochinvar, Nathaniel and My Thorpe, with thci favourite, Juno Nordica, at the head o, tlio remainder. In the final struggle Marosa slopped badly and My. Thorpe, vigorously ridden, got up to win by a length. Prince Lochinvar, who was also tired, was a neck nway third, with Ben Zolock and Nathaniel next, and the rest well back. Oliver Thorpe's First Win. Oliver Thorpo scored his first success when, hard-driven by W. Willetts, he just got home in the Runkiki Handicap, to return • a handsome dividend. The favourite Pol, after getting away, broke up to joso ft lot of ground. Cogent, went away smartly, followed by Condor Bell and Great Vanity, but after leaving the straight the last-named hit the'front, and led along the back from Cogent, Condor Bell, Great tame find Oliver Thorpe. Crossing the top Cogent ran up to Great Vanity and the favourite moved up to third place, with Oliver Thorpe. Great Fame, Betty Gity and Lislea next. Cogent turned for home lust, in advance of Lislea. Great Vanity, Betty Guy, Grout Fame and Oliver Thorpe, and in li punishing finish the last-named did best to win by a neck from Poi. who finished gamely, with Great Fame half a length away third, followed by Myrllone and Lord Lu. Jackie Thorpo gave trouble at the start, and was left several lengths. There wrs a stirring finish in (he Farewell Handicap, when Little Guy got home by a narrow margin from the favourites, M'ister Httia and ITMi Sea. Dad's Hope led out from Little Guy and Some Dillon, ind there was no alteration _ until six furlongs were covered, when Richore rati up to second place and High Sea and Master Muia moved up. Dad's Hope was still in front at the turn from 1 .ittie Guy, Richore. l!i"h Sea and Master Tl'uia, and in the run home the leader tired, leaving Little Guy in charge. Master Htiia and High ! Sea' challenged hotly but Little <"hiy hung ! on to win by a neck from M'jster Hnia, with Hi»h Sea a similar distance away and Richore a head bark fourth. Then came Some Dillon and Dad's Hope.
