OPINION OF FARMERS. COUNTY COUNCIL SYMPATHETIC. [FROM OtXR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TE KUITI. Saturday. The derating of farm lands was urged by a representative deputation of farmeis which waited on the Waitomo County Council at its meeting this week. The deputation presented a petition protest ing against the " present unscientific and obsolete method of obtaining revenue for the construction and maintenance of roads, which calls for direct taxation from a mere handful of ratepayers, whose burden has now become unbearable in efforts to provide loading facilities to (ho travelling public." _ . .Speakers also sought alleviation in regard to tlio general and hospital rates of tho county. The council was sympathetic and it was decided to write to the Farmers' Union, from whom the deputation originated, stating that the council was fully alive to the situation, that it had advocated derating for some time past, and that it would continue to do so.
