DESTRUCTION BY FIRE.

SHOPS AND DINING ROOM. LARGE BUILDING AT PAEROA.. [BY TELEGK.U'H.-i-OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PAEROA, Friday. Fire this evening severely damaged a large building in Normanby Road, Paeroa, occupied by Messrs. A. and G. Laird as a fish shop and dining room, and by Mr. L. Kevin as a fruit and confectionery shop. The tenants dwelt in the back portion of the building. Messrs. Laird's stock and furniture were destroyed. A portion of Mr. Kevin's stock was saved, but it was damaged by water. The building was owned by the Crissrels Estate, and was insured for £650 in the South British OfTico. Messrs. Laird and Kevin's stocks were insured in the New Zealand Office.

TIMBER ALIGHT ON TRUCK. RAILWAY LINE NEAR TAIHAPE. [nv TKLEGIUnr.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAIHAPE, Friday. When a goods train from the North reached Mataroa, near Taihape, early yesterday morning some timber in one of tho trucks was blazing fiercely. It took the railway staff nearly 20 minutes to extinguish the flames, which were leaping high into the air. Fortunately tho truck

containing tho timber was made of iron and received little damago. The limited express from Auckland was delayed about 10 minutes as a result of the outbreak.

OUTBREAK AT MOUNT ROSKILL. JOINERY FACTORY DAMAGED. Fire caused minor damage to a joinery factory, owned by Mr. P. W. l'eate, of Orakei, at the corner of Dominion Road and Foch Avenue, Mount Roskill, shortly after five o'clock yesterday. The alarm was given by the motor-man of a passing tramcar, who noticed flames issuing from a window of the factory. The Mount Roskill Brigade had no difficulty in suppressing the outbreak. The building was insured for £SOO with the National Insurance Company, there being separate policies of £SOO each with the same office on the machinery and timber.

DAMAGE TO MOTOR-CARS. ONE VEHICLE DESTROYED. A motor-car, owned by Mr. William Scott, was destroyed bv fire in Mount. Albert about eleven o'clock yesterday morning. Mr. Scott bad left his car for a short period and on returning found the vehicle in flames. A late call was ans-wered by the Mount Albert Brigade.

A fivc-scatcr Oakland motor-car, the property of Mr. 11. 0. Sawlejof 21, Woodside Road, Mount Eden, caught on fire in a garage at his residence about eleven o'clock last evening. The vehicle had been pushed out of the garage when the Mount Eden Brigade arrived and thi damage was confined to the upholstery of the car.
