PRISONER RECAPTURED
FOUND WORKING ON FARM TWO DAYS OF LIBERTY. TRANSFER TO AUCKLAND.
The prisoner, Augustine William Sullivan, who escaped from custody by jumping from the northbound Alain Trunk express shortly after it left Frankton Junction on Wednesday morning, was recaptured at an early hour yesterday morning in the Te Awamutu district ly Constables Forsyth and Ilimmer, of To Awamutu. Ho was later brought to Auckland by the llotorua express, and will appear in tho Police Court this morning on the charge on which he was airested, one of breaking and entering the house of Catherine Fanny Mortensen. at Epsom. When ho was arrested, Sullivan showed no signs of having been injured by his leap from the train, which was travelling at a fairly fast speed, when he jumped off it. Inquiries showed that he was first seen when he was walking along tho Pirongia-Whatawhata road, where ho was passed by a motor-truck. He was given a ride by the driver of the vehicle, to whom he stated that ho was unemployed and was seeking work. After riding as far as Pirongia, Sullivan called at the farm of a Maori, on the Kawhin Road, 13 miles from To Awamutu, and obtained work \ A resident of Pirongia who had read his description in a newspaper, notified the Te Awamutu police on Thursday evening of his suspicions as to the identity of a stranger in the district. Early yesterday morning the two constables went out to the farm mentioned and found Sullivan there just as he had finished milking. It is stated that Sullivan at first denied his identity, but he afterwards admitted it. Sullivan was handcuffed and taken to To Awamutu, thence to Hamilton. He was transferred to tho Rotorua express, which reached Auckland at 4 p.m. yes terday. He was then taken to the city police- station, whore 110 was lodged in tho cells. Sullivan was arrestee! at Kaikoura last Saturday by a detective from Wellington and was brought before tho Police Court in Wellington 011 Tuesday morning. After being formally charged with breaking and entering tho house at Epsom, ho was remanded to 'appear at Auckland 011 Wednesday morning, and was on his way to Auckland under arrest when 110 made his escape.
