UNEMPLOYED RELIEF.
PROVISION OF LIGHT WORK. NEW SCHEME SUGGESTED. The necessity for providing work for unemployed men who were prevented by physical disability cr age from taking advantage of the present relief schemes was stressed by Sir George Richardson, president of the Returned Soldiers' Association, yesterday. He said that up to the present the Unemployment Board had done nothing for such men, of whom there was a large number. Work was offering for those fit to undertake heavy manual labour, but light work was at present almost unobtainable. A scheme might well be introduced under which private employers could be given an opportunity of placing many of the partially-disabled men, Sir George said. There were no doubt many ways in which proprietors of large retail stores, for example, could enlarge their operations, but at present they could not afford to do so. If a scheme could be evolved to provide subsidised labour, however, it was probable that the employers would take advantage of the opportunity and would provide positions under such a scheme for a large proportion of the unemployed men fit for light work only.
