EARTHQUAKE RELIEF.
CHURCH OF ENGLAND FUND. AUCKLAND'S READY RESPONSE. The appeal made by Archbishop Averill for help on behalf of tho Waiapu diocese as the outcome of flic Hawke's Bay earthquake has met with a gratifying response considering tho present financial stringency. Tho substantial sum of £I7OO has so far been received. There is a pressing need for the immediate erection of some building of a more or less temporary character in Napier to serve as a church for the next few years. Another urgent need is the provision of stipends for clergy. Auckland church people are helping to supply these urgent needs. .I'or example, the archbishop, with the cordial approval of standing committee, has arranged for tho stipend of the Rev. Mr. Zimmerman, curate of St. Augustine's, Napier, to bo paid for 12 months by the Auckland diocese from the funds received in answer to the appeal. St. Augustine's parish could n<>t possibly raise the stipend in tho present circumstances and yet it is at such times as this that living agents are most urgently required. At a conservative estimate the financial loss sustained by the Waiapu diocese through the earthquake is at least £IOO.OOO. Kurt her donations are urgently required.
