IMPROVED PLAYGROUND.

AREA AT NEWMARKET SCHOOL WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED MEN. Extensive operations necessitating tho removal of a large amount of spoil and the blasting of rocks are at present being carried out in the grounds of the Newmarket school. The work, which is being carried out by men who were out of employment, has been in progress for two months, and it is expected that it will be at least as long again beforo it- is completed. It has provided work for as many as 35 men at a time.

The northern end of the playground, in front of the main block, was formerly a rock-strewn slope, but this is now being cut away and levelled to provide a football and sports field at the foot. The sloping bank is being terraced at four levels, and stone walls and paths are being constructed along tho face. It is intended to plant these terraces with shrubs and rock plants, and the paths will form a natural grandstand. Further work is being carried out along tho Gillies Avenue frontage of tho school, where the rock wall bounding portion of the property is being extended to the full length of the frontage, and the rough slopes are being terraced and prepared for flower-beds. When this work is completed it is intended to improve the playground round the infant school at the rear of the main block. This area has lain in almost its natural state for some years. The ground will lie cleared of rubbish and volcanic rock, and properly levelled.

The work was first proposed more than a year ago, when it was found that the total cost would be about £3OOO. The proposal was (hen shelved, but when it became possible to carry out the work under the No. 5 unemployment, scheme the school committee commenced operations. The costs have been kept as low as possible, the committee having obtained the use of tools from the Borough Council. Some of the necessary funds were obtained by concerts, and the Education Board has given assistance. To date about £6OO has been spent on tho work.
