The following aro extracts from the New Zealand Herald of Tuesday, May 3, 1881: —
The vessels in the harbour carried their flags at half-mast yesterday as. a token of respect and an expression of regret for those who perished ou fclio ill-iated Taralua.
A letter from a London correspondent states that the Oxford-Cambridge University boat race, which was held on April 8, was won by Oxford by four lengths. The time-was 21m 51s. Oxford pulled up fresh at the finish, but the Cambridgo crew showed great distress.
One of the results of removing the buildings in the Albert Barracks Reserve lias been to givo the residents of Princes Street, etc., -n excellent view of tho southern portion of the town. Labourers are now engaged in marking off the paths for the gardens and when the trees are planted the reserve should form one of the most delightful places of recreation and amusement in the city, . The chairman of 1 he Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. Compton, has received the report of Mr. Blackett, chief engineer of the Colony, on the best site for a large dock at Auckland. Mr. Blackett states that he has investigated several sites, two on the south side of the harbour, one on each side of the Queen Street Wharf, and three on the north side of the harbour—Calliope Point, Kauri Point and a place midway between. Mr. Blackei.t's report is entirely in favour of Calliope Point, which lie regards as a splendid site in itself, and far superior to any of the others. It has first-rate shelter,,, deep water frontage and facilities for reclamation from the cliff.
