ADVENT OF WINTER.
SEASONAL TRANSITION.
EXIT OF SUMMER SPORTS. GOLF AND FOOTBALL BEGIN. Tho transition of the seasons was marked in Auckland on Saturday l"»y the adoption of winter games in place of summer sports. For some weeks there has been a keenness in the atmosphere which, accompanied by early darkness, has provided a daiiy reminder of the gradual merging of autumn with winter. Bright sunshine on Saturday atoned for the cold snap on Friday, but nevertheless Aucklandcrs took kindly to, their overcoats and forsook swimming, yachting and tennis in favour of football, coif, hunting or some other popular wintei
pastime. Football was tho greatest attraction and on all tho grounds were large attendances of enthusiasts of ono of the three codes, each of which commenced the season's club competitions. Golf clubs also inaugurated tho season with lesser matches, in which there were many competitors, and the Pakuranga Hunt held its initial meet at East Tamaki. Although tho afternoon was pleasant for landsmen, it was not a good one for sailing owing to the absence of wind and most yachtsmen turned their attention to preparing their craft for hauling up to their winter quarters.
Shades of summer still lingered on many tennis courts and bowling greens, which are always the last to yield to winter's claims, but the afternoon was short and the players early sought more substantial protection from tho chill of tho evening than their summer flannels afforded.
