INCOME TAX RETURNS.
MO DETAILS SUPPLIED. A DALMATIAN FINED. Three prosecutions brought by the Taxation Department against Jack Makovina, a, restaurant proprietor, alleging that he had failed to in income tax returns, were heard in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. Mr. Hubble represented the department, and Mr. Kealy appeared on behalf of accused. Mr. Habble said that Makoviaa had sent in no returns until last year, when he filed cne himself. The amount was so high that investigations were made, and it was found that defendant shonld have paid £1034 in the past 10 years. It was a bad case
Mr. Kealy said the prosecution had not resulted from any particular astuteness on the pan of the department, but from defendant's ovrn action -in filing a return last year. Defendant was a Dalmatian by birth, and although he was a naturalissd British subject he was not ••cell acquainted with the la**-. He had a false :dc-a that he had to pay income tax on money derived frcrc investments, bet cot on ordinary business profits. Acetified was fined £2 and costs on each charge.
