UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD.

REPEAL OF ACT SOUGHT.

MOVE BY AUCKLAND LABOUR. Dissatisfaction with the Unemployment Act and its administration was expressed at the conference of executives of trades unions called by the Auckland Trades and Labour Council to discuss matters affecting the workers. After somo discussion a resolution was carried unanimously asking for the repeal of the Act so that an Unemployment Insurance Bill might be introduced. A further resolution recommending unions not to nominate anyone for the present vacancy on the Unemployment Board caused by the retirement of Mr. W. Bromley was also carried. In support of this resolution it was stated that the Trades Council had tried to induce the Minister of Labour to allow the unions the right of election at the time of the setting up of the board, without success. The opinion was expressed that it seemed useless to nominate candidates, as the Minister used his own discretion as to who should be chosen. It was claimed (hat one of the members of the board received nomination from four unions only, while one of those who was ignored in the selection received nomination from 50 organisations.

WORK OR SUSTENANCE. RESOLUTION AT DUNEDIN. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Friday. It was made apparent at a meeting of representatives of local bodies in Dunedin and surrounding districts this afternoon that there is a growing feeling in this centre in favour of bringing into operalion the sustenance provisions of the Unemployment Act. The meeting, which was called by the Mayor to discuss extension of relief works, passed a resolution expressing the opinion that if a local unemployment committee finds itself unable to provide work for all eligible men, the Unemployment Board should comply with the spirit of the. Act and provide sustenance. rather than attempt to place the onus on the hospital boards of the Dominion to supply outdoor relief.
