COUNCIL OF WOMEN.
UNEMPLOYMENT QUESTION. DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Friday. The New Zealand National Council of Women 1 concluded its conference to-day. The most important subject' dealt with was unemployment among women. A deputation of the whole .council waited on thi* Minister of Labour, Hon. S. G. Smith, and presented a series of resolutions upon the question. Another deputation waited on the Prime Minister. The resolutions adopted suggested that the National Council be appointed to act as an unemployment board for women; that a grant be made to the council for investigating the "problem of" unemployed women and establishing practical schemes such as home industries: that the Govern- % ment be supported in any practical scheme of putting unemployed men and women on the land; that the Government subsidise factories • employing women in the manufacture of necessities; that the women of N ew Zealand should ni>t curtail expenditure in the employment of domestic workers or otherwise until absolutely necessary.
The Minister said the points raised would receive consideration.
The annual meeting followed. Officers were elected as follows:—Dominion president, Miss B. E. Carnachan (Auckland); Dominion secretary, Miss C. J. Flatt (Auckland); Dominion treasurer, Miss E. Jackson (Auckland; hon. auditor, Miss Basten (Auckland) ;■ hon. solicitor, Miss E. Melville (Auckland); Parliamentary committee, Miss England, Mrs. A. Stone, Mrs. Perryman, ' Mrs. M. Forde and Miss Kirk; international secretary, Miss 0. Flatt (Auckland). The next conference will be held in March.
