EMBARGO ON LIVESTOCK.
MR. FORBES FAVOURS LIFTING
ADEQUATE PRECAUTIONS TAKEN [by telegraph.—press association.] WELLINGTON, Friday. Replying lo a question by Mr. K. S. Williams (Reform— Bay of Plenty) in the House of Representatives to-day, the Prime Minister, tho Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, said tho Government had not yet considered the motion which ho understood had been passed by the Board of Agriculture, favouring the lifting of the embargo on tho importation of pedigree stock.
He personally was of the opinion that the time had arrived when the embargo should be lifted because the quality of New Zealand stock was suffering owing to a lack of fresh blood. While in England he had inspected tho Empire Marketing Board's quarantine station, and he was satisfied that the precautions were adequate to prevent the transhipment of infected stock.
Referring to a recent case where it was reported that 'foot and mouth diseaso had brokon out in Argentina, Mr. Forbes said it had boen established that while a bull imported from England was concerned, the disease had been communicated to the animal while it was in Argentina.
