The Bridge Table.
ANALYSING THE HANDS. DV MAJOR TEN'ACB The problem given below is a fairly simple illustration of analysis and correct management.
Z is making a no-trump contract at love score, and A leads the jack of spades. Dummy plays (lie queen, B the three, and Z the four. How should Z plan the rest of the play, and why ? Last week's problem was as follows:
At love score Z bids one no trump, and all pass. A leads the six of spades; dummy plays the nine; B the king, and Z tho two. At trick two B leads the seven of spades and Z plays the jack. How should A play and Why ? Solution: From the play it looks very much as though Z had risked a no-trump bid on a doublcton spade headed by the jack, in the hope of finding his partner with the other half of the and jack guard. If this is so, then B still has the three of spades. If A puts up his ace at trick two and leads a third round, dummy's queen will win, and 15 will be exhausted of spades. A's only chance of running the suit then will be to get in with his king of dia nionds. If he ducks tho second trick, however, lie will preserve a second chance of running his spades, for B will still have a card of the suit in hand, and, should he get in on any. subsequent round, he will lead it. Dummy's queen will then fall under the ace, and the way will be clear for a run of tlie suit. Z should therefore play low to trick two.
