MISUSE OF MONEY.
CHARGE AGAINST COLLECTOR. ADMITTED TO PROBATION. A middle-aged collector, Squire Surxidge (Mr., Allan Moody), was charged in the Police Court yesterday with fraudulently omitting to account for sums of money totalling £27 lis 6d collected on behalf of the Australian Mutual Provident Society between October 25, 1930, and January 27, 1931. He pleaded guilty.
Counsel said that when accused was before the Court on March 6 it was suggested that his defalcations were due to muddle, rather than to any criminal action. The case was adjourned without a conviction being recorded, but as accused had done nothing in the way of restitution he had again been brought to the Court. ■ It was understood that th& society/ which had employed accused was insured with another company against defalcations. ,
The probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, said accused had never been in trouble in the past and was worthy of a chanCe h Unless a conviction were entered against him, however, the society could not recover from the other insurance company. The magistrate, Mr. F. _K. Hunt, admitted Surridge to probation for 12 months.
