STOCKS AND SHARES.

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE. GOVERNMENT BONDS SOUGHT. Although a comparatively heavy volume of business was recorded on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday, the market generally had an easier tone, weaknesses which doveloped in certain sections earlier in tho week being accentuated. Sellers tended to predominate for all securities outside the gilt-edgo section.

Tho 5J per cent, issue of Government slock maturing in 1933 gained 5s on the price earlier in the week, to change hands as 1198 ss. The 5£ per cent, issue was also firmer, a salo being put through at the closing call at £99 7s 6d, compared with business in tho South earlier in tho week at £99 ss.

The market for bank shares showed a sagging tendency as the day progressed. Commercials of Australia were offered at 15s 6d at tho last call, compared with sales tho previous morning at 15s Bd. Sellers of New South Wales dropped 5s during the day. Steady sellers of Unions failed to draw a buyer. New Zealands gained 6d to change hands at 51s 9d. South British Insuraneo shares had their first sale since tho beginning of tho month at 555, a gain of 6d over the poriod. A buyer came in for New Zealand and River Plato shares at 20s 6d, compared with the last sale over six months ago at 28s; sellers were not attracted. Auckland Gas shares lost 3d to chango hands at 22s 9d. Tho market for New Zealand Breweries fell sharply during the day, buyers offering 32s 3d at tho afternoon call, compared with -35s tho day before. Sellers asked- 34s 6d.. In tho miscellaneous section British Tobaccos changed hands during the morning at tho current prico of 30s 3d. Colonial Sugars were again slightly firmer, buyers moving up 10s on tho market of tho previous day. Kempt horne-Frossers had their first sale since the middle of Febru-' ary at 545, a gain of 4s over tho period. In tho mining section King Solomons were firmer, a salo taking place at 2s A Sale of Waihis was reported from late the previous afternoon at 15s sd. Waihi Grand Junctions lost Id to sell at 2s sd. Mount Lyolls changed hands at 20s.
