ASSAULT AND MISCHIEF.
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE. LABOURER SENT TO PRISON. "Accused went round the house striking everything with a mop and caused damage to the extent of £SO; he also assaulted three people," said DetectiveSergeant Kelly in the Police Court yesterday, when Lewis Neary, aged 40, labourer, was charged with assaulting William John Dalglish, Charles Samuel Cook and Mary Porter, and with committing mischief by wilfully damaging furniture and panes of glass. He pleaded guilty. Mr. Kelly stated that on Thursday evening Constable Stewart was called to a boarding house in Cook Street. On arrival ho found that accused, who was under the influence of liquor, had been fighting with another man and had assaulted three other people. He was very violent and had to bo thrown and handcuffed. The place was strewn with broken glass, furniture and crockery, accused having gone round the house with a mop breaking everything within his reach. Prior to his arrest, accused, who was no stranger to the Court, threatened one inan with a knife and another with a safety razor. Neary said there was not a scratch on the people he had assaulted. He could make good the damage if given time. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, sentenced accused to one month's imprisonment on the first assault charge, convictions without penalties being recorded on the other two assault counts. On the mischief charge he was ordered to' make good the damage, default being fixed at one month's imprisonment, the sontence to be cumulative with the other term.
