AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

MEETING AT CAMBRIDGE.

GARLICK'S UNIVERSITY TITLES

After a break of five years the Cambridge Amateur Athletic Club was reformed this season and last Saturday the first meeting of the new club was decided in the Cambridge Domain before a large crowd of spectators. The fixture was a complete success and athletes who journeyed from Auckland said it was the finest country meeting held in recent years. A bright sun quickly dried up the track after overnight rain, and in the afternoon conditions were ideal for running. The 100 yds. final was a good race and resulted in a win for D. Williams, an exAucklander, and brother of L. C. Williams, the ex-Auckland champion. Cambridge scored again when Wells won the 220 yds. from McKenzie, of Auckland, in a spirited finish. It. L. Darley was put back three yards for breaking in the 440 yds. handicap, but he soon made this up and, running well, won by syds. The 880 yds. provided a great finish, A. Blow and J. Watt having a tussle up the straight, which ended in a doad-heat. Witt en and Fade both ran well, but could not quite get up with the field. A big field started in the mile handicap, which was won by R. Parker, on the limit. N. F. Cooper was again in form and just failed to reach the winner in an exciting finish. J. Shirley exhibited all his old skill to win the 120 yds. hurdles in a great race. All four finalists jumped well until the eighth hurdle, which brought down Morgan and Speade. The mile relay was another race which raised the spectators to a high pitch of excitement. Cooper ran the first 880 yds. for Auckland, and gained a lead which Witten held over the next 440 yds. Then Gudsell ran a great 220 yds., and, with a lead of 10yds., handed over the baton to Fade. Morgan, Hamilton's last man, set off at a great pace, but Fade held on to win by 6yds., with the Cambridge last man 10yds. away third. The one mile walk was greatly appreciated by the spectators. S. Gudsell, who was conceding A. Simmons 125 yds., gave a fine exhibition and won comfortably in the fast time of 7m. 15s.

H. C. Carlick put up splendid performances in winning the 100 yds. and 220 yds. New Zealand university titles. His time of 10s. for the 100 yds. .was excellent.,
