NORTHCOTE AFFAIRS.
SPORTS GROUND SCHEME. The Northcote Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, presiding. The provisional financial statement showed that the year closed with an overdraft of £2541. Against this there were claims against the Government of £627. Unpaid rates amount to £3114, and after allowing rates on houses which have reverted to the Crown (approximately £350). tho balance of outstanding rates is £2764.
Pending consideration of terms, the council agreed tn continue to afford fire protection to Birkenhead. In a letter of protest, regarding the proposal to exclude the tidal water from the tuff crater near the mouth of Onepoto Creek, for the purpose of transforming the basin into a recreation protind, Mr. A. E. IT. Harrison suggested that the council would be well advised to consider the provision of an aquatic park in at least a. portion of (he 44 acres. A reply is to be sent that (he work of constructing a stop-bank across (he mouth of the'tuff crater at. Onepoto Creek is intended to be undertaken as an unemployment relief scheme, and the council contemplates this being carried through with practically little expense to the borough fund. An aquatic park would involve dredging, and no funds aro availablo for this purpose.
