TRAMS TO AVONDALE.
TENDERS CLOSE SHORTLY. REBUILDING A BRIDGE.
The Transport Board has fixed next Monday as the date for the closing of tenders for the excavation work required in connection with the extension of the tram rails from Mount Albert to Avondale. A special meeting of the board will be called to consider them.
Speaking at yesterday's meeting of the board, the chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, said he had asked the Works Committee of the City Council to allow for a double line of rails over the bridge near the Avondale railway station instead of a singlo track as at present proposed. The bridge would have to be strengthend, if not rebuilt, and the city engineer was now drafting plans to meet the board's requirements. Mr. Allum said he had informed the Works Committee that the board would be willing to contribute to the cost of the work in proportion to the board's responsibility. At the same time, it had to be recognised that it was not the board which was rebuilding the bridge.
