STOWAWAY FROM SYDNEY.
ARRESTED ON AORANGI. " RETURNING TO CANADA." Arrested on the arrival of the Aorangi' from Sydney yesterday morning, an Irish motor engineer. Thomas McKeown, aged 28, was charged in the Police Court later in the day with stowing away on the liner. Ho pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said accused was discovered on board the Aorangi about an hour after leaving Sydney. The fare was £7 10s. Mr. Aekins said accused had lived in Canada for several years. He went to Australia some time ago, but finding conditions no better there than in Canada he decided to return. As he had no money, having been, robbed of from 60 to 70 dollars by " confidence" men, be asked the shipping company to give him a passage on the understanding that he would pay as soon as be could. The company refused, however, and accused accordingly stowed away. ' The magistrate, Mr. E. C. Culten, fined McKeown £7 10s, the. amount of tho fare, in default 14 days' imprisonment.
