TRAWLING IN GULF.

EXTENSION OF LIMITS.

SHORT SUPPLY OF FISH. The Government restrictions on trawling operations in certain areas of the Hauraki Gulf were removed this week, when the restriction period of four months elapsed. Trawling operations on the grounds this week, however, have not been successful and supplies of fish are rather scarce.

A representative of a trawling company stated yesterday that the Government, in trying to conserve the fish in the areas, was only destroying them. Fish could thrive on shell and other foods which were disturbed from the sea-bed by the nets and the increased number of fish attracted to these areas more than counter-balanced the depleting effect of the trawlers. A week's trawling would be necessary, he said, before the sea-bed could bo sufficiently disturbed to attract fish.
