ALLEGATION OF ARSON.

TAXI-DRIVER CHARGED.

BAIL OPPOSED BY POLICE.

A charge of arson was preferred against John Lewis Gunning, aged 41, taxi-driver (Mr. Sullivan), in ihe Police Court yesterday. It was a'leged that accused wilfully set fire to shirts, trousers &nd other articles, bo situated that a building occupied by Mr. W. 8. Miller, in Dominion Road, was in danger of catching fire. Accused did not plead* Detective-Sergeant Kelly asked for a week's remand.

"I ask for bail," said counsel. "Accused is married and is receiving medical treatment, which I would not like t'o be interrupted. "He is not bailable," said Mr. Kelly, who proceeded to give a brief outline of the case for the prosecution. .

Counsel objected to thn detailing of police statements until the actual hearing of the case, and submitted that if the magistrate .desired to receive particulars from the police before granting bail, the proceedings should be yi chambers. Gunning was remanded until Thursday in custody. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, said ho would consider an application in chambers for bail.
