MAORI WARS RECALLED.
DEATH OF CHIEFTAINESIS. [FROM OUIt OWN CORRESPONDENT.} HUNTLY, Wednesday. Tlia death has occurred at the Maori settlement at Waahi of Kaiwha Mita, widow of the late Maori chief Mautarai at the age of 95 years. A chieftainess of the Nga'ti Mahuta tribe, Kaiwha Mita had a vivid recollection of the early Maori wars. She was in the thick of operations in the famous Battle of Rangiriri, where she was in charge of the nursing oil the wounded natives. She was born near Kawhia.
Thero was a large attendance at the interment at Taupiri mountain, overlooking the Waikato, and among the mourners were Rata Mahuta, the Maori " king," the chiefs Wharua, of Bangiriri, and Ts Pakru, of Okoroire.
