SHWE DAGON PAGODA.
SERIOUS DAMAGE BY FIRE.
INNER SHRINES DESTROYED. CALCUTTA. March 9. The famous Shwe Dagon pagoda in Rangoon was badly damaged by a. fire which destroyed the tazaungs, or miniature places of worship. They aro beautifully carved and contain golden images studded with precious stones. The damage is estimated at £15,000.
The Shwe Dagon pagoda, or slupa, at Rangoon, is the most famous and venerated of the many temples and stupas m Burma, many of which were built in the 11th century, A. IX The Shwo Dagon is modern, its tapering form, the tall spiro being almost continuous with Ihe body ol the building, contrasts with Ihe oldei hemispherical form of earlier art. Tlio pagoda is covered with leaf gold, which is renewed at intervals. Ihe pagoda is especially venerated as it contains several hairs of Gautama Buddha.
