MAIL CLOSING HOUR.
AN EXTENSION PROPOSED.
DELAYING THE SECOND EXPRESS.
The inconvenience caused to the business community through the earlier closing of mails by the Auckland-Wellington expresses since tho opening of the new station was again considered by tho Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday. Mails now close at 5.10 p.m., instead of 5.30 p.m., as formerly. The secretary of the chamber, Dr. E. P. Neale, said the matter had been thoroughly discussed with tho chief postmaster and it was proposed to delay tho train now leaving at 7.40 p.m. until 8 p.m., but it was found that there were difficulties in tho way of this. Tho main difficulty seemed to be that on Saturdays the train would meet the outward suburban traffic from Wellington. The suggestion had been made that tho train could be run two hours later on Fridays. Thore was no afternoon delivery to connect with in Wellington on Saturdays. It would reduce tho present long interval of .47 hours without expresses to Wellington and it would be convenient for people employed on Friday evenings. The Railway Department was inquiring into the practicability of the proposal and there would bo a report at the next meeting.
