THE PRICE OF LEATHER.

Sir, —It was recorded in Wednesday's Hehald that a Putaruru farmer received the large amount of 5s 3d for half-dozen sheepskins. Go to any local leather wholesale house and for a sheepskin of any quality the price is from 42s to 90s per dozen. I have spoken to many farmers and butchers who say that it is not worth while selling cow or bullock hides, as they only get a few shillings for same; yet when the hides are tanned they cost from 2s to 3s 6d per lb., and answer to about £6 or more to the hide. Surely after allowing a fair profit, and seeing the price hides are bought at, tho high price of leather is extraordinary. Is it any wonder farmers and butchers are neglecting the hide business ? This is a matter which needs the Stock Department's immediate attention. Split.
