NUMBERING OF HOUSES.

WORK IN CITY AREA.

SUPPLY OF NUMERALS

Tlio renumbering of houses in the streets of the city area is shortly to be commenced by the City Council staff. The new numbers are to take the form of individual figures, 2in. high, cut out of solid brass and screwed 011 to conspicuous portions of the various premises, such as gates or gate-posts, verandah posts and Iho lintels of shops. It is anticipated that almost 50.000 of these metal numerals will be required, and the cost of supplying .and affixing them, approximately £2OOO, will be borne by the council. The first supply of the numbers has now been received from tho manufacturers, and arrangements are being made to commence tlio work in the Point Chevalier district. Many business premises and dwellings in tho city at present are not marked by numbers of any kind, and others have them in such obscure places that they cannot bo read from the road. 111 many streets there is also confusion of numbers. and this has to be remedied. A good deal of this lattei work has already been done, but the new plan will enable it to be carried much further. At various times tht council has supplied numbers to property-owners free of charge. The form adopted years ago was a small elliptical plate enamelled with the complete number, of one, two or three figures. Later a porcelain plate, slightly larger, was adopted. These forms are now to be abandoned in favour of the individual brass figures. The enamel and porcelain plates had the advantage pf not tarnishing, but it wa< not practicable to make them with figures much over an inch in height, which- is not considered large enough. They were also liable to damage and disfigurement when placed close to the street.
