ASSAULT AND ROBBERY.
MAN KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS. BAG CONTAINING £SB STOLEN. I Assaulted by two strangers with whom he had shared a taxicah to his homo at 5, Selwyn.Road, Kpsorn, ut an early hour on New Year's Day, the proprietor of ,i city restaurant, Mr. A. M. Baird, was robbed of a handbag containing £SB, which represented two days' takings at the cafe. As lie was parting from the men outside his front gate, he was struck !in the face several times, receiving a fiacture of the nose and injuries to the jaw, which rendered him unconscious. Before he lost his senses, he called for help, and his wifo and neighbours, who were at a party at a house opposite, came to his help. By this time the two men lia<J disappeared, Mr. Baird slated yesterday that lie had remained at the Kenown Cafe, of which ho is one of the proprietors, in Queen Street, until about 1 o'clock on New Year's morning. Two men, who were strangers to him, had been in the restaurant on two different, occasions and had remained there for some time. lie left shortly after one o'clock, and crossing Queen Street, hailed a taxicab which was travelling up the road. As he was getting in, he was joined in conversation by the other men, the upshot being that they entered the taxicab with him. When Mr. Baird reached his home, the men also alighted, and after .Mr. Baird had paid the driver the taxicab left. Shortly afterward, as the men were saying farewell to Mr. Baird, they assaulted him. Mr. Baird was taken to the Auckland Hospital late yesterday afternoon, suffering from injuries to tho head. TTis condition was not serious Inst everting.
