MARSHAL JOFFRE.
PATIENT IN A COMA. VISITORS MUCH AFFECTED. PARIS, Jnn. 1. Marshal Joffre this evening was reported still to be in a coma, into which he sank at 11 a.m. The fact of his breathing being so slight and irregular apparently caused rumours of his death, which in the first place became current among the crowds gathered in the street. At the sight of weeping women other visitors, including M. Millerand, who was Minister of War in 1914, and Colonel des Mazes, Marshal Joffre's Chicf-of Staff, became affected and were seen to depart in tears. The report was broadcast throughout France and tokens of mourning appeared everywhere. An hour later the report was corrected and official inquiry is being made as to how the rumour began. FALSE REPORT OF DEATH. LATER OFFICIAL BULLETIN. SYDNEY, Jan. 2. A cable message was received from London announcing the death of Marshal Joffre, hut a subsequent message stated that the report was unfounded, and that an official bulletin had been issued, Saying he was resting tranquilly.
