DAIRYING YIELD.

Disturbed though primary industry may be by the world position and outlook, the figures for the current dairying season, from its opening to the end of November, show that the producers in the Auckland district have not relaxed their efforts to secure an increased output. The production of butter and cheese for that period, in terms of butter-fat, has reached the remarkable total of 52,704,0001b., compared with 47,675,0001b. for the equivalent portion of the last season, an increase of roughly 15 per cent. The farmer is not receiving the reward for his labours ho was entitled to expect and undoubtedly did expect. That feature of the position means that this evidence of industry, enterprise and improved technique must be regarded with much more restraint than if prices had been up to the level of other seasons. Movements in the overseas markets, largely the reflex of world conditions, have made many plans, based on perfectly legitimate expectations, go awry. But, while making every allowance for the consequences following the season's price position, consequences ranging from disappointment to something more serious, the figures still justify a modified satisfaction. It is inconceivable that the low levels, or even the average to date of this year, will be maintained. When the return to better things has been made, the advance in production will be there to allow of full advantage being taken of improved rates. When he has reached a high mark, the dairy farmer does not slip back again. He goes on to something higher yet. That has been the evidence of past years., Since recent price movements suggest that even this season will not end so badly as it threatened to do, the dairy farmer may yet receive something more commensurate with what he deserves for the work the production figures represent.
