THE NATIVE FLORA.
MANY UNIQUE FEATURES. The trees and plants of New Zealand are at all seasons unique in their appearance and diverse in their foliage and habit of growth. They are described by botanists as of long descent, but they are of most recent date, being only known since the discovery of the colony, and acurately described by Sir Joseph Hooker and a few other notable botanists. Some native trees, notably the kauri, the rimu, puriri, rata, pohutukawa, kawaka, taraire, mangeao, tree ferns and others, rank among the aristocracy of the vegetable kingdom. They are to be seen at this season clothed in all their beauty, so very distinct in their leafage and other characteristics as (o cause planters, both for beauty and profit, to specialise in their selections by the inclusion of the many beautiful species and varieties belonging to Now Zealand's nativo flora.
Pittosporum obcordatum is one of the rarest plants known as regards its native location. The beautiful trees and shrubs belonging to New Zealand are by judicious selection, arrangement and location, and with ordinary treatment, not difficult to establish, either as single specimens or grouped and mixed together as in their original forests and coastal wilds. Consequently planters should, as far as possible, endeavour to imitate the native flora and reproduce and perpetuate the natural features of this fair land. They will thus be a source of wonder and delight to the stranger and a continual pleasure to qui- people generally.
