SAMOAN HIGH CHIEF.
DISTINCTION FOR MALIETOA.
Malietoa, who has been honoured by the King with an Honorary 0.8. E., is the most important High Chief of Samoa and is a descendant of the Malietoa, through whose friendship and influence the pioneer missionary, the Rev. John Williams, was able to establish Christianity in the Islands 100 years.ago.
He is the son of Malietoa Laupepa who with High Chief Mataafa played a piominent part in the Samoan kingship troubles in the 'nineties and during the German regime in Samoa. He holds the most important native title in Samoa and by virtue of bin high status is also" s, Government official, viz., Fautui (or native adviser to the Administrator). He now holds this position together with another high chief, Mataafa Malietoa is at present one of two native members of the local Legislative Council representing the native race. He visited New Zealand in 1927 on the occasion of the visit of the Duke of York, to whom he presented an address of loyalty on behalf of-the &'?inocn, people.
