IDLE STEAMERS.
UNION COMPANY VESSELS.
LARGE NUMBER AT AUCKLAND.
Ten of the Union Company's steamers are laid up at Auckland, and the transpacific cargo vessels Waikawa and Waiotapu, which are due next week from Westport and Newcastle respectively, will also be laid up. Some have ibeen withdrawn owing to the slackness of trade and others to undergo overhaul. Some are idle owing to the holidays and they will be recommisskraed early this month when the west coast mines resume working. The idle vessels of the company's fleet now in port are the steamers Karepo. Kaituna, Kanna, Kaimiro, Waipahi, Waitemata, Waitomo, Kurow, Kairanga and Waimea. The Waitomo, Waitemata, Kairanga are transpacific cargo steamers and have been withdrawn owing to the slackness of trade between America and Naw Zealand. When the Waikawa and Waiotapu are withdrawn next week it will leave only the Wairuna, Waihcmo and Hauraki in the transpacific cargo service.
