After being away from New Zealand for 26 years, Dr. John Y. Bartholomew, now a flight surgeon iri the American United Stales Air lorce, smd commanding officer of a military hospital in "San Francisco,, anived by the Miirama on Wednesday on a visit to relatives in the Dominion.

When 16 years of age Dr. Bartholomew ran awav from his home, which was in. Feildinj;,, with thci idea of joining & Xow Zealand contingent sailing for active servico in South Africa. Obstacles, however, were placed in the way of his ambition, his parents withholding their consent and the military authorities imposing a minimum enlisting age of 21. In 1904 he went to America with relatives and commenced to study medicine. He later went to Europe and obtained diplomas .at loulon and Vienna Universities, after which he commenced practice in California.

Later, Dr. Bartholomew graduated at the School of Aviation Medicine at Brooksfield, Texas, where Colonel Lindberg was trained. He saw active service in France with the American Air Force, holding the rank of lieutenant-colonel. -
