BRIGADE FOREMAN'S DEATH. » ■ FATALITY AT WANGANUI. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WANGANUI, Thursdny. Tho foreman of the Central Fire Brigade, Mr. Alexander Hird, collapsed and died while on duty at a fire at ono o'clock this morning. Tho brigade was called to St. George's Gate, a part of the old residential quarter of Wanganui, where an unoccupied hoinn was on fire. Tho men wore in charge of Superintendent Williams in the first instance, but another call, which proved to bo a false alarm, took him away, the command of tho brigade falling on Mr. Hird, who died before tho fire was extinguished. An inquest was opened this morning and was adjourned. Deceased, who was 36 years of age and had a wife and two children, had been six years with tho brigade, taking the foroman's position after being in charge at Castlecliff. ,Ha was i» eplendid type of fire-fighter.
