COX'S CREEK ACCIDENT.

VAIN «RESUSCITATION EFFORTS.

A drowning accident, resulting in the death of Robert Allan Sutherland, aged nine years and 11 months, of 79, West End Road, Grey Lynn, occurred in Cox's Creek, a tidal estuary on the western harbour front, yesterday afternoon. Numerous other young children were bathing in the vicinity at the time, the tide being on the ebb. It is not clear how the accident happened, but it is believed the boy was subject to fits, and presumably he had a seizure while in the water. Mr. E. Maples, of Hinemoa Road, who was bathing in the vicinity, noticed several children holding the lad with a view to keeping his head above the water. He took the boy ashore and tried resuscitation methods but without success. Dr. V. F. Usher, of Ponsonby, was summoned, but further resuscitation efforts also failed.

The boy's father is Mr. R. J. Sutherland, an employee of the Northern Steamship Company. An inquest will be held this morning.

The present holiday season in Auckland has been singularly freo from fatalities, and this is the first drowning accident which has occurred in the vicinity of the city during that period.
