THE WATERFRONT ROAD.

Sir, —I would like to draw attention to the notice board at the entrance to tho new waterfront road to Orakei. It reads that the road is opon from 7 a.m.until sunset. On several occasions now I, with others, have been at this entrance an hour before sunset only to find the gates locked each time. I would like to add, if this road, which is very handy for motorists to go through to Orakei, is closed at sunsot on account of the bridge at the far end of the road, I cannot understand why the entrance from Shoie Road, where there is a bridge with two far more dangerous approaches, is never locked. E. T. Needham.

Sir, —I suggest that "Wuitemata Drive" would bo an appropriate name for this beautiful—if expensive—highway. If it bo desired to take the opportunity of honouring the name of a notable figure in our Dominion's history, that of Edward Gibbon Wakefield occurs to cne as being of incomparably greater moment than Hobson's. Relatively to Wakefield's, Hobson's services to this country were microscopic. No adequate monument has yet been erected in New Zealand to the memory of its greater founder. I suggest that the designation of "Wakefield Drive" would be a suitable—if tardy—recognition of tho man to whom New Zealanders owe so much. Edward Russell.
