A BARGAIN HORSE.

MACHINE GUN'S RECORD

r. a. McMillan's good luck.

Macliino Gun, winner of (he Champion Handicap, has proved a wonderful investment for the Tamahere trainer R. A. McMillan, who secured him about 18 months ngo from Mr. G. McMillan, of Auckland. Machine Gun was bred in Australia, being by Machine Brick from Thora, and he was brought to New Zealand by J. Offer, who in 1926 won the Otahuhu Cup with Machine Brick. Machine Gun was purchased by Mr. G. McMillan for £6OO and won several races under the charge of R. B. Berry.

Mr. G. McMillan, who was particularly fond of a straight-out, trotter, later made a deal with R. A. McMillan for Bingen Starr, a promising trotter. The trainer got the best of the deal, taking Machine Gun as an exchange and receiving £3OO as well in contingencies. Bingen Starf afterwards won two trotting events and then died, R. A. McMillan receiving £2OO as a result of the contingency deal. In the meantime Machine Gun struck the top of his form and last season won several good races, to finish up the season with a total of £IBO7 in prize-money, his successes including the Otahuhu Cup, a race won previously by his sire. Machine Gun's final victory last xeason war in tho C'oates' Handicap at the Otnhuhu summer meeting, where off a 2.43 mark he won easily after a brilliant run over the last three furlongs, to register the time he was set to do.

With that, performance in his favour Machine Gun was well handicapped in the Champion Handicap on 2.43, and it was Bomewhat surprising to find him only fifth in order of favouritism, especially as he showed up prominently in the cup on Saturday. Machine Gun has now won in stakes £2217 for R. A. McMillan and hie prospects of still further success are more than reasonable. He has undoubtedly proved a great bargain.
