SHORTAGE OF POWER.
EFFECT OF DRY WEATHER.
ECONOMY AT NEW PLYMOUTH.
TRAMS AND LIGHTS CURTAILED.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH. Monday.
With the continuance of dry weather the electricity department' of the New Plymouth Borough Council is again experiencing great difficulty in coping with the demands for power. This morning the tramway service was considerably curtailed, and motor-buses running to a number of suburbs had to be requisitioned to help to relieve the position along the tram route. '
Other consumers of electric-power are also suffering great inconvenience, and housewives who have to rely on electricity for cooking are becoming concerned at the position. This evening all the street lights were extinguished and the community shop-lighting system was also suspended. The borough usually obtains extra power from the Taranaki Power Board, but owing to the low level of the water at the Tariki dam no assistance can be given at the periods when it is most necessary.
