POSITION IN AUCKLAND. CHRISTMAS GRANT BALANCE. A special sum of £2400 was made available by t.he Unemployment Board to Auckland local bodies for the relief of unemployment just prior to Christmas, and after 1063 men had been assisted through this fund £Bl6 remained unexpended. The question of how this may be turned to best advantage will be considered by the local committee in charge of the fund to-day. No definite decision has been made yet, but as far as possible the money will be used for men who were not included in last week's felief schemes, and will be devotod to similar improvement schemes.

"The thing that impresses me is the urgent need of a new labour bureau," said Sir George Richardson, chairman of the executive of the local Unemployment Relief Corrimittee, yesterday. "The present accommodation is quite inadequate and makes it impossible to handle a large number of unemployed. It is a disgrace. Suitable premises—even if only temporary —are urgently required to enable a proper organisation to be set up." The Unemployment Board will resume its activities in Wellington on January 6, when it will consider various schemes and suggestions. It ig probable that the board will immediately divide into committees for the investigation of proposals to provide employment throughout the Dominion.
