EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. The following are extracts from the ( New Zealand Hekald of December 29, 1880: A fatality occurred during the running '■ of the Auckland Cup at the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting at Ellersliei. 'The well-known Australian and New Zealand jockey John Nolan was killed when his horse Libeller collided with King Quail, the rider of which, Fred Carrington, was hurt. King Quail suffered a bruised shoulder, while Libeller was seriously shaken. The fortrxightly meeting of the Harbour Board was held yesterday. The principal feature of the business was a motion by the chairman, Captain McKenzie, in effect*. "That this board petition the General Government to amend the constitution of the board so as to make it elective, and that all elections be held under the pro- . visions of the Regulation of Local Elections Act, 1876." The discussion was adjourned. The death is reported by cablegram from London of one who has been before the British public for the last. 40 years. We allude to Mr. Alderman Mechi. the name by which Mr % John Joseph Mechi was most widely known. He acquired fame and a fortune as the inventor of "Mechi's Magic Razor Strop." Mr. Mechi was also an authority upon agriculture, and there is no gainsaying the fact that the teachings and example of Mr. Alderman Mechi have had a beneficial effect upon agriculture, both in Britain and other countries. He died at the ripe age of 78 years
