FIFTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD* The following are extracts from tha New Zealand Herald of December 11< 1880: As the summer advances a good deal of surplus will be absorbed in the carrying out of certain city works. Among these will be the diversion of the city drainage, the approaches from Durham Street to Albert btreet, and the cuttings and embankment in Upper Union .Street, at its junction with Be r esford Street. An* other work is likely to be completed this summer, as the opposition of certain landowners has been withdrawn, namely, tho cutting down of High Street, from chancery Street to its intersection with Vic-, toria Street. News has been received of another serious murderous outrage in Ireland. -J. hiiiliff, while executing a. decree for tha eviction of a tenant from a farm at town, in the County Tyrone, was set upon bv the tenant and a number of his sympathisers, and murdered by them before ho could escape. _ The Parihaka survey is proceeding steadily without any obstruction on tho part of the natives. There have been no more attempts at fencing, the Maoris contenting themselves with guarding tna gap in the wheat paddock fence where tha road passes through. The discovery of a gold field at Pokeno is still a probability in the eyes_ of certain of the settlers of that locality. Tbtt locality of the-discovery is the range between the settlement and the Firth of Thames. Quartz has been frequently found, indeed is common. Late reports have been circulated on the strength of some quartz found by some surveyors the district.
